  1. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Add the onion and carrot, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring often, until soft but not browned, about 3 minutes.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook a further minute. Add the kale and stir to coat.
  3. Pour in the broth and add the sage, stir to combine, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the kale is tender, about 18 minutes.
  4. Add the beans and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until heated through.
  5. Remove from the heat and using a hand held immersion blender, briefly blend just to thicken slightly but leaving most of the beans whole.
  6. Taste for seasoning and serve piping hot.
